Vehicle Equipment Product Design Engineer

         

Sterling Fleet Outfitters is seeking a motivated and creative person who will work as a Mechanical Design Engineer of Commercial Vehicle Equipment and Accessories, supporting our product innovation strategy. This role involves designing, prototyping and testing new van and truck equipment products as well as managing designs and improving existing products. The role also involves working with customers to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Mechanical Design Engineer role:

  • Maintaining and updating designs and drawings of existing products such as formed metal panels and sheet material vehicle linings.
  • Nesting of sheet material components to determine optimal material usage and clearly communicating this to stakeholders.
  • Product design of custom sheet metal and other products from concept to production-ready status.
  • Management of existing product designs. This involves; developing resolutions to design issues and correcting them, creating revisions to models and drawings, filing all documents in a logical, standardized way, and advising team members and vendors of the revisions.
  • Maintaining and updating designs and drawings of existing products such as formed metal panels and sheet material vehicle linings.
  • Nesting of sheet material components to determine optimal material usage and clearly communicating this to stakeholders.
  • Creating work instructions for assembly and installation of van and truck equipment.
  • Connecting with vendors by phone and email as required, to source and adapt products.
  • Prototyping of new products. Typically building a rough concept product, overseeing the installation of it, testing it, adapting it and repeating this process as required to fine tune a product/design
  • Supporting the customer service team when technical/electrical issues arise – to maintain customer satisfaction

Requirements:

  • Proficient in the use of Solidworks 2018 and newer
  • Experienced and proficient in sheet metal product design including the sheet metal segment of Solidworks.
  • Experienced and proficient in the management of 3D models and drawing revisions with the ability to produce quality 3D renders for product marketing.
  • Experience working with vehicles or transportation equipment and/or the design of equipment for motorized vehicles or transportation.
  • Experienced understanding of electrical systems, including DC vehicle power systems, power inverters, and AC power systems
  • Competence with modern office software such as Microsoft Office and accounting software.
  • Competence in identifying the level of importance of quality, uniqueness, functionality and cost-effectiveness of a product, and being able to effectively balance these factors in the design of a product.
  • Ability to source components and work with potential vendors in a professional way that protects and benefits the company.
  • Creative mindset; this person continually looks for ways to innovate and to improve products and processes.
  • Awareness of new technologies and eagerness to apply them

Additional desirable capabilities/experience:

  • Ability to design semi-complex products
  • Experience in aluminum extrusion design.
  • Experience in the design of transportation equipment.
  • Packaging design experience.
  • Expertise in QMS and inventory management.
  • Experience in Lean methodology and implementation.
  • Experience with mentoring and/or leading a team
